Maiden Win for Hamilton in Azerbaijan

Lewis Hamilton secured his first win both at the Baku City Circuit and of the 2018 season.

The race wasn't without its fair share of events and deemed the most exciting of the season so far by the thousands of fans watching in the grandstands and on televisions around the world.

Poleman Sebastian Vettel led the field away from the line and cleanly through Turn 1 without any incidents. However, Turn 2 was a completely different story. Four way contact involving Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon and Sergey Sirotkin occurred. Luckily for Ferrari and McLaren, the damage sustained was superficial. Unfortunately for Force India and Williams, the problems were terminal.

The first six laps were completed under safety car. When racing got back underway, Vettel and Lewis Hamilton traded fastest laps. Pit stops mixed up the general order but didn't help Hamilton to get ahead of Vettel.

After their sister team's drivers came together during Qualifying, Red Bull were cautious and keen not to repeat this. Sadly for Christian Horner, his drivers had other ideas. Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo fought hammer and tong throughout the race. On Lap 40, they came to blows and both retired on the spot.

With the safety car out again, the gap between Vettel and Hamilton diminished. Both were ready to restart as soon as the Red Bull's had been removed. However, it was delayed by Romain Grosjean, who locked up and hit the wall BEHIND THE SAFETY CAR!

The race finally got going again on Lap 48, with 4 laps remaining. The tension appeared to get too much for Vettel, who locked up, allowing Hamilton AND Vettel past. The drama continued on Lap 49 as race leader Valterri Bottas suffered a puncture caused by debris left on circuit from Romain Grosjean's crash.

Hamilton took the lead and carefully guided his Mercedes machine to victory for the first time in 2018. The win also adds Hamilton to the list of Azerbaijan Grand Prix winners.
